Welcome

Bath Counselling Practice
My name is Nana-Anua

I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor based in central Bath. I offer in person and online psychodynamic counselling, for adults.
Why Counselling?
People come to counselling for a variety of different and unique reasons. Some people are experiencing anxiety and depression which may be affecting their daily life and ability to carry out everyday tasks. Some people are experiencing a high level of stress due to their work or living situation. Some people are finding relationships with family, friends and loved ones challenging. It may be that you are a person of colour navigating some difficult issues to do with race and identity. Perhaps the current climate is causing anxiety.

Others come with a question or questions which may be weighing on their minds such as wondering whether they should end or begin a relationship or perhaps questions about gender and identity. It may even be grief or loss which brings people to counselling.

Many have experienced a difficult childhood which may be affecting their lives today, perhaps how they interact with a partner or their children.
It is not uncommon for some people to not know exactly what has brought them to counselling. It might simply be a sense that something is not quite right. Often people describe feeling stuck and needing someone to talk to.
I am a neurodivergent-friendly counsellor, working with clients who already have a diagnosis, are awaiting a diagnosis and want to explore what it could mean for them or who suspect they may be neurodivergent but are not ready to take the next step toward formal diagnosis.
Psychodynamic Counselling
Psychodynamic counselling is a type of talk therapy that helps us understand why we feel and act the way we do by exploring past experiences.

It's based on the idea that our current feelings, relationships, and difficulties are often shaped by patterns and emotions developed in our childhood that we're not fully aware of (our unconscious).

How it Works:
Exploring the Past: We will explore your past including your early life and memories. We will think about how the past may be influencing current difficulties.
Noticing Patterns: We will explore patterns in your life, recurring themes and how they are affecting you.
Explore Unconscious Thoughts and Feelings: Through simply talking we will begin to notice deep held thoughts and feelings and how they may be affecting your life.

Online Counselling
The power of connection extends beyond the traditional therapy room. Online counselling can be a great alternative for many people who might face barriers to coming into the therapy room such as distance, anxiety, mobility and time.

I offer the same caring, supportive approach for my online clients. As with in person work, sessions are on the same day and at the same time each week. You will need a device capable of connecting to the internet and a stable internet connection. You will also need to be in an appropriate private space, preferably in your home. Together we can find a convenient day and time for your session.
About Me
I trained with Wessex Counselling and Psychotherapy in Frome, Somerset. My training was psychodynamic. I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am a member of the Black African Asian Therapy Network (BAATN) I adhere to the BACP ethical framework and the BPC code of conduct.
I offer a safe, non judgemental and confidential space to explore your feelings whether this is in person or online.

What I offer

1. A brief phone call:
We will have a brief chat on the phone where you can tell me about your decision to seek counselling.
2. Initial sessions:

We may have up to four initial sessions where we will explore more fully what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to achieve from your sessions. In theses sessions, we will explore whether we are a good fit for working together. There is no obligation, on either side, to continue after the initial sessions come to an end.
3. Regular sessions:
If we do proceed, you will have a weekly session lasting 50 minutes. The session day and time will remain the same. It is important to make sure this is a convenient time and day before agreeing to continue. Please be mindful that I work in an open ended way, which means there is no set time for completion of our work together.
